I cannot get over the ending to the Appeal - I actually thought perhaps my copy of the book was missing a chapter! Please re-write or "add on" to set my mind at ease. I loved the book and couldn't put it down but it's unbelievable that the "bad guys" prosper at the end! I want a follow on with Carl Trudeau's life taking a turn for the worst if at all possible???

You and I must have finished reading "The Appeal," at about the same time. Really shocked at the "ending."
I really agree with you; the ending did not match the book. I feel like I may have wasted my time reading "the Appeal", and will probably not read any new Grisham novels.
I just watched the movie "Frature," and I love how there were 2 alternate endings. (Thank God they chose the best for the film.)
Is the ending in "The Appeal, really what Grisham had in mind. I feel so cheated and let down and why???
Very depressing ending to an otherwise great book.

I found this website with similar intentions as these other people, and I feel comforted to know I am not alone in my indignace at the ending of The Appeal! I know that not every book should have a happy fairy tale ending (and it would be boring if they did), but the reader has to be able to come away from a story with some semblence of satisfaction. Who wants to read a book that ends that way?? Had I read the last paragraph of this book beforehand, I would not have wasted my time reading it. The story was good, well-written as usual, and the plot intriguing - and there was no point in the story that I ever doubted the big corporation would end up having to pay in the end. Even when it looked like certain defeat for the trial lawyers, I just thought that would make ending even better when victory was finally had. When I read the last page, I did not even realize it was the last page until I turned the page and saw the "Author's note." It reminded me of the Partner, which left me feeling equally indignant as the The Appeal. I loved everything about that book, including the fantastically clever resolution to the main character's legal problems, until the last page and a half when the girlfriend ran away with the money. That ending frankly just sucked and ruined an otherwise fabulous story. Most of all, it was unfounded - there was nothing in the entire book that ever gave the reader the slightest inkling that the girlfriend was anything other than completely faithful and unwavering in her love and devotion to Patrick. If she wanted to run away, she would have done it a long time ago - she had control of the money the entire time! Anyway, I am definitely going to read the last paragraph of the next John Grisham book I pick up before I read the rest of it. No one wants to read a book that ends that way!

The ending was disappointing, but it was realisitc at the same time. In the end the bad guy often wins. I read the entire book in about eight hours while in the car. It was a great book with a sucky ending!

I agree with Honeybee regarding the ending in The Partner and wonder if it is possible there could be a sequel to this book.

I agree that I was surprised by the ending, much like when I read The Partner. But, as someone who has read all 21 of his novels (if I'm missing one please correct me), I realize that's what makes him such a good author. The end was shocking because it was something we didn't expect; it did indeed come out of 'left field' so to speak. But such was the same with The Chamber, at least in my case. I believed at points that Sam Cayhall was really going to be spared, or that they would catch the actual guy behind the bombing. Alas, an accessory was put to death for the crime of 3 people. They say art imitates life, and in real life people buy judges, juries, even governors and presidents. I thought the book was great, and though the ending was shocking it only added to the Grisham experience. I will admit, however, that I would like a sequel...

I think the point is that the ending is supposed to be depressing -- so the reader experiences Grisham's frustration with a state system where judges are elected. Isn't the whole book about how the system is inherently unjust due to these conflicts of interest? I mean if the good guys won, what does that mean for his point that we shouldn't elect judges??
I just don't understand how Fisk went from supporting the plaintiffs in his short concurrence to siding with Krane in the end. What happened? He caved to the pressure?

I live in Louisiana. I'm 55 years old and have worked many campaigns. The ending could not be more true. It's real. I live in Louisiana and if anyone knows anything about LA politics; it's done all the time. For example, Cleo Fields (Dem) jumped into a governor's race with Mary Landrieu (Dem),one other Politician (Dem) and Mike Foster (Rep), towards the end of the campaign. He caused the black vote to be split; therefore, taking Mary Landrieu's votes and allowing Mike Foster (R) to win. He got money under the table to do this. So, he threw the race to the opposite party-Republican. Another example comes from the most recent race for the US Senate by Don Cazayoux (caz-you) and Steve Cassidy. Although Michal Jackson is a Democrat like Cazayoux, he split the Black vote, knowing that assuredly, cassidy (Rep.) would win. This cost Obama one of his US senate seats-to stop a filibuster. It came out, honestly about both of these politicians (Fields and Jackson). For the money, they sold Blacks down the river and the Democratic party. They don't even care about the public now looking at them as crooks. However, African-Americans were warned by some radio messages, etc. "Don't fall for it. Stick with Cazayoux because it's impossible for Jackson to win. Same as with Fields against Landrieu. They voted for them anyway. They just don't get it/didn't get it. They do it, as a race, every time-Get dupped. True story. Sooooo, "THE APPEAL" is actually the true picture. I'd rather have the truth, than a sugar coated; feel good ending.

JOHN GRISHAM IS MY FAVORITE AUTHER. I WAS GOING TO HAVE SURGURY LAST YEAR SO I BOUGHT ALL OF HIS BOOKS. I LOVED HIS EARLIER BOOKS BUT I SURE HAVE BEEN DISAPOINTED WITH THE LAST HALF . HE SHOULD HAVE STAYED WITH HIS EARLIER BOOKS (THE ENDING) AFTER ALL THEY WERE THE ONES THAT MADE HIM FAMOUS. HE MAY HAVE WANTED TO CHANGE HIS ENDINGS BUT HIS READERS SURE DIDN`T. I FOR ONE WILL NOT BUY ANYMORE OF HIS BOOKS UNLESS HE CHANGES.
