In 1970, one of Mississippi’s more colorful weekly newspapers, The Ford County Times, went bankrupt. Many were surprised when the ownership was assumed by a 23 year-old college dropout Willie Traynor. Newspaper’s future looked grim until a young mother was brutally raped and murdered by a member of the notorious Padgitt family. Traynor reported all the gruesome details, and his newspaper began to prosper.

The murderer, Danny Padgitt, was tried before a packed courthouse in Clanton, Mississippi. The trial came to a startling and dramatic end when the defendant threatened revenge against the jurors if they convicted him. Nevertheless, they found him guilty, and he was sentenced to life in prison.

But in Mississippi in 1970, “life” didn’t necessarily mean “life,” and nine years later Danny Padgitt managed to get himself paroled. He returned to Ford County, and the retribution began.

Will there be a movie coming out based on this novel?

  5. Rasmus said on Wednesday May 09, 2007 03:44 PM:

You never know. A few years in an interview Grisham said he has some doubts whether it will appeal to the moviemakers but at least personally he can see “The Last Juror” becoming a movie.

You can read the full interview here.

I am currently reading “The Associate” by John Grisham. This book is captivating and has caught my full attention. Being that I have been reading intently, not to miss a word, I found an error in a character quote. On Page 177 Grisham writes “Brother Manny issued the question and absorbed the answers with such ease……..KYLE felt as though he could chat for hours and tell him everything”…..I believe what Mr. Grisham intended to be in print was the character name of BAXTER, as he is in rehab and who was conversing with Brother Manny.

I do enjoy a good court room read and this is why I really enjoy reading John Grisham’s books. I am a very slow reader though and tend to find little mistakes in every book. Wrong words mainly “they” instead of “then” just silly little things. Doe’s not spoil the books though. They are great!

Excellent book. Well written. It kept my attention from cover to cover. Detailed and accurate account of the south during the 70’s. I grew up in the rural south and could easily relate to the Ruffins and Willie’s relationship.
This one would make an great movie as well as The Street Lawyer. Thanks for giving us such remarkable books Mr. Grisham.
