They found him in Ponta Pora, a pleasant little town in Brazil, on the border of Paraguay, in a land still known as the Frontier.

They watched Danilo Silva for days before they finally grabbed him. He was living alone, a quiet life on a shady street in Brazil; a simple life in a modest home, certainly not one of luxury. Certainly no evidence of the fortune they thought he had stolen. He was much thinner and his face had been altered. He spoke a different language, and spoke it very well. But Danilo had a past with many chapters.

Four years earlier he had been Patrick Lanigan, a young partner in a prominent Biloxi law firm. He had a pretty wife, a new daughter, and a bright future. Then one cold winter night Patrick was trapped in a burning car and died a horrible death. When he was buried his casket held nothing more than his ashes. From a short distance away, Patrick watched his own burial. Then he fled. Six weeks later, a fortune was stolen from his ex-law firm’s offshore account. And Patrick fled some more. But they found him.

    Hi John

Yes this book, indeed, needs a sequel. Not a chance Eva turned on him….her parting “mind thoughts” were not even into that direction…..

I didnt realize this book came out in 1997. Its 2009……maybe a sequel is not in the cards……

I actually believed in her as a character….

This book has to have a sequel. Everything was so well planned. It can’t end like that. They must meet up.

Please write a sequel to The Partner. The ending is haunting since it doesn’t follow the direction of Eva’s character at all. It’s sad to think Patrick’s life will be lonely and unhappy after all he endured.

Please write a sequel to The partner. All that planninig and Eva leaves Patrick. Come on.

I too missed this original publication. I found this book at a library sale and bought all of the Grisham books I had not read. I read this book in 2 days. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE write a sequel!!!! This definitely needs one. I have loved every book that Grisham has written (The Chamber being my least favorite) but I would say by far this is my favorite. PLEASE, AGAIN I ASK YOU, WRITE A SEQUEL TO THIS ONE!!! Eva can’t just disappear with the money. There has to be more.

I agree, a sequel is needed. This was a fantastic book, kept me guessing throughout. The implications at the end did not match up with Eva’s character. Personally, I think that Stephano had something to do with Eva’s disappearance. I hope that a sequel gets written, though with how much time has passed, I doubt it.

This is the first Grisham book I have read, and was great until the last page. It is also the last Grisham book I will read. I will not commit that much time to being so thoroughly disappointed again.

Well I just got through reading this novel in two days. Great book looks like Pat will be doing some hunting with Pepper in the woods outside his mom’s house.

I just finished reading “The Partner” after getting it two days ago! You cannot leave an ending like that! THIS BOOK HAS TO HAVE A SEQUEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I kept going back a few chapters to re read about Eva being in London, the wire transfers of the money, their conversation in Sandy’s car about meeting in Aix, ect, ect, ect…..the ending just does not match up. Eva wouldn’t take the money and run. She and Patrick wouldn’t have talked about having 10-11 children, she wouldn’t have helped him plan out the entire napping of him just to leave him at the end. I thought this would be the BEST JG book i’ve read, but I am highly disapointed at the ending….i’m mad as hell.

GIVE US CLOSURE JOHN GRISHAM. IT’S BEEN 13 YEARS SINCE YOU WROTE THIS BOOK. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE give us a SEQUEL.

Excellent book! Patrick, Patrick, Patrick… after all of your careful planning and scheming how could you have been so stupid? I think this was a last minute decision of Eva’s, I don’t believe that she planned this all along. I think that her shopping trip in London made her turn.

ending blew my mind!! why do you think I’m on internet searching for a sequel?? There just has to be one. The sooner the better!

“When you commit a murder you make twenty-five mistakes. If you can think of fifteen of them, you’re a genius.” Patrick made the mistake of trusting somebody; in this case, it was Eva. Well thought out book, and it makes me want to read some more of Grisham. (My first novel by John)

Thanks Mr. Grisham. One of the best stories I’ve ever read. But you MUST write a sequel!!! Please! I want more. I have read this one twice now and I’m sure I will read it again in a few years time. I have most of your books in my personal collection of favourites. You are the Master of great story writing.

I HAVE READ MOST OF YOUR BOOKS AND WOULD HAVE TO SAY THAT THE PARTNER IS THE ONE THAT I LIKE THE MOST, I WOULDNT SAY I WAS DISSAPOINTED AT THE ENDING, UNEXPECTED BUT NOT DISSAPOINTED,I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THERE IS A PROLOUGE OR SEQUEL TO THE BOOK OR A MOVIE IN THE WORKS

  19. Warren E. Lambert said on Saturday February 26, 2011 02:13 PM:

A full book lenght sequel would be nice. If that is out of the question why not 25-50 pages of why Eva, at the last minute, deserts Patrick as well as her love of life in Brazil which includes her beloved father. Her behavior just doesn’t fit. I have concidered many times the parallel of Patricks behavior/reasons for disapperance and that of Eva’s. It just don’t work! Period! Do you answer these comments?

  20. JC said on Monday February 28, 2011 02:32 PM:

I loved the book! BUT::: along the way I thought/knew that sweet, beautiful EVA would run with the money and leave Patrick penniless in the end. Patrick’s pay back for the “crimes”? or a man’s blind love and trusting a woman who played with a poker face? A sequel should have, could have been written, but that is up to Genius Grisham, not the readers or fans. Wish I had part II waiting on the shelf to go pick up and start. We read his books because he keeps us HOOKED.

I have never been so disappointed with the ending of a book. John Grisham I am so upset with you for leaving us so empty. You owe it to your readers to write a sequel. Shame on you if you don’t.

  22. Laura Blacknell said on Monday June 06, 2011 05:22 PM:

I, like the other 21 people who have commented about a sequel to The Partner, was so happy to see you wrote this book in 1997. I went on line, only to be disappointed that there wasn’t one. I guess my husband and I will have to wait a little longer. Hope you are tossing around some ideas in your brain. Hope to read you soon……Love your books!
