Screenwriter Ann Peacock (The Chronicles of Narnia, Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, Nights in Rodanthe) has been hired to write the movie adaptation of John Grisham’s 1997 novel “The Partner”.

The project, from Oscar-winning producer Bob Chartoff (Rocky) and newcomer Velocity Management, centers on a disillusioned lawyer who steals $90 million from his law firm, stages his own death and successfully disappears for several years. What at first seems to be a brilliant white-collar crime is further complicated by a murder charge.

Chartoff and Lynn Hendee will produce for Chartoff Prods., while Grant Turck and Mark Bethea will produce for Velocity. Pernille Trojgaard of Buttercookie Prods. put together the initial financing and will executive produce.

Other Grisham novels to be turned into feature films include “The Firm”, “The Client”, “A Time To Kill”, “The Rainmaker” and “Runaway Jury”.

“The Partner” as a film – this will be a great movie! I hope that the movie making crew is good enough.

I think Christian Bale is an actor capable of doing this leading role, because he is a chamaleon… You can see The Machinist to prove this.

I have read the book and I am looking forward to watching this movie. I hope that everything they that is portrayed on the book could be really identical on the film.

This would make an incredibly good movie if done true to the book. However, I would imagine that a studio would have a hard time greenlighting a movie with the poetically just ending of The Partner.

This is my all time favorite Grisham. I cannot wait. I think someone like Leo or Robert Downey Jr would be fanastic, with Eva played by Maria Bello, or Penelope Cruz.

I first read “The Rainmaker” in 1996, my first JG novel and quickly discovered why his novels had been dubbed “literary crack.” I read a variety of literature, non-fiction primarily, and look forward to reading a cerebral page-turner once or more a year. John Grisham’s novels have always provided me that opportunity. After having read fourteen to date, “The Partner” is by far and away my favorite (spurring in addition an avid interest in Brazil). I’ve always wondered why a screenplay and film did not follow. The story and lead role will probably propel at least one or two actors’ respective careers. My hope is that creative people can work as a cohesive group to successfully bring this story to the screen.

Just finished “The Partner” which was my favorite Grisham book yet. Do the movie but please stay true to the book. Action scenes must be dramatic to hold broad audience attention.

Perhaps The Partner is one of the best books written by John Grisham. This book maintains the suspense until the very end and never, ever one can imagine the outcome.

Is the film out or not, have checked different websites, put us out of misery. What is it’s titled if it is not ‘the partner’. This project had been announced since 2008 and it is 2010 now???????

So the last post was back in July… & so has there been any information regarding Production and the like discovered? I can’t find out anything! Sure would love for the film to be released. I think Ryan Reynolds would make for an excellent Lead as Lanigan and Maybe Sofia Vergara as Eva Miranda?

This is my favorite Grisham book, hands down, and I’ve read near all of them. From the first time I read it, I thought it would make a great movie. Let’s hope it doesn’t disappoint.

Grrrrreat news!! I have read all the Grisham books (am almost done with The Confession) but without a doubt, The Partner was my all time favorite!! I have read it at least 8 times (twice w/i the 1st week it was out!) and enjoy it every time!! Tho I’m usually always disappointed with the movies that are based on books, it is still fun to see how they are portrayed.

  19. tiffany leigh said on Monday November 15, 2010 09:37 PM:

I am looking forward to the movie. I just finished the book. There is definitely an audience for this movie. Keep it action packed and it will be a big seller. Is it still being produced? If so, when will it come out. I’m very anxious!

A fantastic book, which I could not put down at all. I would love to watch the film adaptation but that seems to have gone cold.

  21. Abey Saied said on Saturday February 05, 2011 05:50 AM:

Just re-read the book again last night in one sitting. Brilliant! Doubt Hollywood will respect the ending though – and of course, the narrative is much too complex for the big screen. The Firm is one of my all-time favorite movies & books, but it had to be adapted quite a bit to work as well as it did in film.

“The Partner” is a brilliant Book. I would like to see a sequel by Grisham where the story continues- perhaps “The Partner Part Two” where Patrick and Eva meet again. She falls madly in Love with him and he drops her like an old shoe (after he retrives his money of course -but we’ll leave the plot to the writer.

Too bad they never did this. The main thing they have to do is have Tommy Lee Jones play Jack Stephano. It’s the only role that is non-negotiable for me. Stephano’s presence throughout the whole book just screamed of Tommy Lee. Everyone else:

    1. Patrick Lanigan- George Clooney
    2. Eva Miranda- Penelope Cruz
    3. Sandy McDermott- John Hamm
    4. Benny Aricia- Eric Roberts
    5. Judge Karl Huskey- Paul Giamatti
    6. Jack Stephano- Tommy Lee Jones
    7. Hamilton Jaynes- Michael Douglas
    8. Agent Cutter- Chiwetel Ejiofor
    9. Mark Birch- John Slattery
    10. Trudy Lanigan- Marisa Tomei
    11. Lance Maxa- Channing Tatum
    12. Charles Bogan- Jeffrey Donovan
    13. Doug Vitrano- Barry Pepper
    14. T.L. Parrish- Oliver Platt
    15. J. Murray Riddleton- Michael Fassbender
    16. Paulo Miranda – Héctor Elizondo

For the life of me, I forgot the names of the other FBI characters, but I imagine those can be filled by guys like Thomas Haden Church & Woody Harrelson.

Did the movie ever get made??? It will never be as good as the book, but I want to see it anyway. Apparently it was scrapped since it was 2008 when it was planned.

I enjoyed reading The Partner so much. Is there a sequel to it? There has to be.
